A  Welcome to the Family

A Naming Ceremony is a celebration that welcomes a new family member into its extended family and community. It’s a non-religious alternative to a Christening or Baptism which allows the child to make an informed choice, later in life, regarding any religious commitment. There is no time frame associated with a child’s naming. Some parents choose to name their child shortly after birth, while others prefer to incorporate it into the child’s first birthday. A naming is also suitable for older children, step children or adopted children, a wonderful way to enhance their self-esteem and affirm their place in the family unit.

The parents acknowledge their responsibilities and offer vows of love and dedication, the family matriarchs and patriarchs are honoured, and their wealth of wisdom and experiences called upon to assist the parents. The family heritage and traditions are passed on and generations are joined. Godparents, Guardians or Mentors are appointed as advisers and are asked to take a lifelong interest in the child’s development.

There are many ways to include other siblings and the Godparents, Guardians or Mentors through additional rituals such as a Family Candle Lighting or Sand Blending ritual and a blessing by the Grandparents and Great Grandparents is a lovely inclusion. Other rituals such as a Wishing Box, Ribbon or Elemental Blessing, Crystal Unity Bowl, a Time Capsule, Tree of Life or Tree Planting ceremony can add a unique and memorable touch. You may also wish to include a reference to the child's Zodiac sign and their Planetary Angel as a spiritual guide.

The significance and the giving of the child’s name is celebrated with the sprinkling of petals or water, and Bubble Blowing, a Butterfly or Balloon Release is an exciting way to conclude the ceremony.
